The Family Farm
The family farm now owned by Charles and Karen Smiarowski was purchased in 1959 by Charlie’s father Joseph. Joe raised vegetables for the wholesale market mainly selling to area supermarkets like Stop and Shop and Fosters Market. Joe also started the Field of Mums in the mid 1970′s. Charlie continues the field of mum tradition growing 20000 mums a year. The Field of Mums has been a customer favorite for over 30 years now.
The farm is 30 acres and Charlie rents another 45 acres to meet the demand of their two retail locations and the many wholesale accounts, selling to other farm stands as well as local supermarkets.
The season starts with Asparagus then as Strawberries arrive Peas, Beans and Squash start to come in. Corn is one of the crops which a great deal of acreage is used. Western Massachusetts sweet corn has always been a favorite with local residents. The Corn season starts in July and goes to October with new plantings every week through out the spring planting season.
As summer starts to become fall brings the Field of Mums, Pumpkins, fall Squash an fall ornamentals.
